WHO'S IN THAT PHOTO???

This is the world's first photograph to show a human figure. This was taken by Louis Daguerre (a French artist and chemist, recognized for his invention of the daguerreotype process of photography - Courtesy: Wikipedia) in 1839. The picture is actually of a very busy street with lots of human and vehicle traffic. But the exposure time was very much longer than today's standards (8-9 mins). That made the fast moving city traffic and human figures invisible in the picture. But if you look closely, you can see a gentleman getting his shoes polished. He must have stood really still long enough to get his silhouette in the picture. You can also see an unclear shadow of the chap who was doing the polishing. He must have moved indefinitely in his attempt to do the job, but still his image is vaguely visible probably due to the very short or swift movements he would have made while polishing. The strange thing is that no body knows or would ever know who that gentleman and the shoe polisher were!!!

Anyways, its a beautiful picture.

I married a widow whom I deeply loved and dated for 3 years. "After a couple of years, my father fell in love with my step-daughter and so my father became my son-in-law and I became my father's father-in-law.

Legally now my daughter is my mother and my wife my grandmother.

More problems occurred when I had a son. My son is my father's brother and so he is my uncle. Situations turned worse when my father had a son. Now my father's son i.e. my brother is my grandson.

Ultimately, I have become my own grand father and I am my own grandson.

Everybody must be familiar with the sun light being used as a source of electricity, but have you heard of using Moon to generate electricity??? Yes, it is true. Scientists have succeeded in using moon's gravitational pull to spin specially designed turbines to generate electricity. Well, it's not that simple as it sounds. Tides at sea are mainly caused by the gravitational power of the moon and also to certain extent, the sun's gravity. The moon's gravitational pull is more than that of the sun just by the fact that moon is closer to earth than the Sun. This makes its gravity about 2.3 times more than the Sun's. Since the moon makes a complete orbit around the Earth every 27.3 days, every part of the earth at sometime get affected by its gravitational pull. This effect can be felt most on the earth's water bodies. Moon's gravity is the main cause of tides. The height of the tide depends on the moons position relative to the earth; called the high tides and low tides. The changing tide produced at a given location is the result of the changing positions of the Moon and Sun relative to the Earth coupled with the effects of Earth rotation and the bathymetry of oceans, seas and estuaries.

Due to the earth's rotation and moon's revolution around the earth, on a given day every part of the earth waterbodies experience 2 high tides and 2 low tides. When high tide happens, the water level increases beyond the normal height and viceversa, during a low tide. During this process energy is generated. It is this energy that the scientists have finally succeeded in harnessing. When the sealevel rises due to the high tide, the water gets stored in special reservoirs. Now during the low tide, this stored water is released and made to turn turbines to generate electricity. Significant amount of electricity can be produced using this process.

A minimum of 5metres of water level increase is required for this process. In certain areas of France water level rises 13 to 15mts during high tides. It is due to this fact that France was the first country to start a power plant for harnessing Lunar energy. It was in 1967, the RANCE power plant opened in France. It had 24 power generators which together produced 10MW of electricity. After France, Canada and Russia started similar power plants. Other countries are yet to catchup.

In Norway, researches have found another means of producing electricity using tidal force. During the tidal changes, the speed of water also significantly rises. Using this water speed, underwater turbines can be turned just like the wind-mills. According to the researchers, in oceans and other water bodies, where ever there is a minimum 3mtr/sec flow of water, this process of generating electricity can be implemented.

The above methods are 100% pollution free. 11,00,000MW of energy can be produced using lunar power around the globe in an year, in which only 10% can be used to generate electricity. This fact makes these methods, highly expensive when compared to the prevailing processes on electricity generation. Hence the consumers will have to pay phenomenal amounts of money for using such produced electricity. So is it worth??? As of now, NO is the answer. But when earth's other sources of energy gets depleted, as a powerful source like the Sun, Moon will shine more brighter . Lets hope and pray that such a time is not nearby.

When I was doing my Nautical degree course, the institute where I studied used to take us for visiting merchant ships. During one of such visits we were lucky enough to be welcomed onboard an Indian war-ship. The officers and crew of that ship were very friendly and they invited us to the bridge (navigation area) where we met the Captain of that ship. He was a jovial fellow, unlike the kind you see on war-ships. He explained us the good, bad and ugly side of being on a warship especially during the war scenarios. Also told us a few the so called sea-stories, one of which caught our attention too well. Thought of sharing that story with the readers hence I'm posting it below.

A mariner who reads the below story, would find it equally amazing and funny. But a non-mariner may not feel the same way with out a little explanation. So let me first introduce the terms PORT and STARBOARD specially for the sake of non-mariner readers. These are the shipping terms used to denote LEFT and RIGHT sides of a ship respectively. These two are very important terms as far as a mariner is concerned or rather to whom ever goes to sea for a living. In other words, these are the two very first words that a mariner needs to know even before he sets his foot on a ship. There is also an very old saying (which is absolutely bullshit - but a saying is a saying, right?)

''The one who knows the port and starboard of his ship, doesn't require stars to navigate''

Such is the importance of those words. Anyways, I do not wish to bore you readers with further explanation. Here is the story,

Once upon a time there was a famous sea captain. This captain was very successful at what he did; for years he guided merchant ships all over the world. Never did stormy seas or pirates get the best of him. He was admired by his crew and fellow captains. However, there was one thing different about this captain. Every morning he went through a strange ritual. He would lock himself in his quarters and open a small safe. In the safe was an envelope with a piece of paper inside. He would stare at the paper for a minute, and then lock it back up. Afterward, he would go about his daily duties. For years this went on, and his crew became very curious. Was it a treasure map? Was it a letter from a long lost love? Everyone speculated about the contents of the strange envelope.

One day the captain died at sea. After laying the captain's body to rest, the first mate led the entire crew into the captain’s quarters. He opened the safe, got the envelope, and opened it and... The first mate turned pale and showed the paper to the others. Four words were on the paper; 2 lines with 2 words each:

If you love watching your favorite DVDs on your PC, then you must be aware that DVDs may be encoded with a region code restricting the area of the world in which they can be played. The purpose of this is to allow motion picture studios to control aspects of a release, including content, release date, and, especially, price, according to the region. The DVD drives in personal computers are set to allow DVD region changes for just 5 times after which only the DVDs from the last set region can be played. This is very annoying. I've always got in to a dilemmatic state when I try to watch a DVD on my laptop and then a message pops up saying ''This DVD is region 1 and your DVD drive is set to region 2. You should set your DVD region to 1 to play this DVD. Press OK to change your DVD region to region 1.'' and below this prompt you can see the number of region changes left.

After you have used all regions then what to do??? Dump your DVD drive in the garbage bin and buy a new one??? To hell with it. Duh!

I wonder how the highly overpraised movie ''Slumdog Millionaire'' actually won the Oscar for the best film at the 81st Academy Awards. It is an average movie. The story is well said, and the A.R.Rahman's music is not bad. But then the movie was nothing new to us. We, Indians have witnessed movies which are far more interesting, challenging and exciting than Slumdog Millionaire. May be the main reason behind Slumdog's victory at the Oscars is that such a plot(story) is completely new to the Western crowd (The Yankees and Brits)

If the same movie was made under an Indian banner (lets say, by an Indian director) it wouldn't have got a nomination even under the Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars. Same rule applies to the the song ''Jai ho'' by A.R.Rahman, the Indian music maestro, which bagged two Oscars. If that song was sewn in to some Indian movie, it wouldn't have got so much recognition as it has received now under the Slumdog Millionaire banner. Story has it that, A.R.Rahman actually composed music for the song ''Jai ho'' for a movie named YUVRAAJ(2008) by Indian director Subhash Ghai. The song was not added to that movie because the director thought the song didn't suit the theme or mood of that particular film. Rahman then bought the copyright for the song from Subhash Ghai to use it in the movie Slumdog Millionaire.

All his songs in Slumdog movie are of average quality when compared to the usual standard of his songs. Still he won not just one but two Oscars. But I must admit that I liked the song ''Jai Ho'' after listening to it a couple of times. The beginning music of that song sounds like a copy of James Bond 007 theme. The other song ''O sayya'' which was nominated along with ''Jai ho'' is an absolute bore. Wonder how it even got nominated!

Danny Boyle and his team should say thanks to the Lady Luck for their unbelievable and unexpected win at the Oscars. Luck played a big role in making this movie a winner.

By Sandipan Deb. Frankly, I don't think Slumdog Millionaire deserved the Oscar for best film. And even more frankly, I don't think Resul Pookutty should have invoked "my country and my civilisation" in his acceptance speech for best sound mixing. India was not up there in the Kodak auditorium for approval. It was a British film financed by the indie subsidiary of an American studio which happened to be set in India and as a result they could not help but involve Indian actors (including Indian-origin Britishers) and shoot it in India. We crave too much for international recognition. A bit too much than is seemly. Even as all of us go around strutting, pretending to be a superpower.

Other than Slumdog, I have seen only one film out of the other four nominated. But I've read about all of them. The one that I saw is The Reader. The subject is far more intellectually challenging, emotionally moving and morally disturbing than Slumdog can ever hope to be. Not since A Last Tango In Paris has nudity (both male and female) been so necessary to a film's narrative, and so non-titillating and so touching. A film which stretches over 30 years and with essentially only two characters, and yet a film that is as gripping as a thriller. It's a film that, as my friend told me, demands and requires to be seen in one sitting, with no interruption by commercials and visits to the loo.

But look at the themes of the other movies that were nominated this year. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the love story of a man who is born as an extreme geriatric and keeps getting younger and dies as a newborn. Only for a brief period of time are the man and his beloved around the same compatible age. Of course it's an impossible concept and completely unbelievable, but it's a high concept. Milk is about the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in the United States; Frost/Nixon about the first interview disgraced US President Richard Nixon gave, to has-been TV journalist David Frost. For both of them, it is a chance for redemption, for a somewhat sane life. These are all big themes. I am not doubting Slumdog's quality as a film in any way. Danny Boyle is one of the most talented directors around. But comparing Slumdog to The Reader is almost impossible. It's like comparing A Christmas Carol to Great Expectations.

Scrooge won, little Pip lost. But that's the way it has been with the Oscars. Sometimes the nominations reflect the mood of America's liberals, sometimes the winners reflect political correctness. In 2006, the following five films were nominated: Good Night and Good Luck, Brokeback Mountain, Crash, Capote and Munich. Good Night and Good Luck is about a TV broadcaster who took on the McCarthyist witch hunt in the 1950s; essentially about freedom of the press. Brokeback Mountain deflated the entire mythology of uber-macho frontiersmen by portraying a deep homosexual relationship between two cowboys. Crash interlinked several stories to study racism in all its forms and in startling ways. Capote was about the gay writer Truman Capote who travels to the South of the US to write a book on two multiple murderers. Munich told the story of the Israeli agents who hunted down the Black September terrorists who killed Israeli athletes during the Munich Olympics, and asked the question: To take revenge, do we become as base as the men who are our targets?

There's a clear pattern: anger over the Iraq war, the stifling of the media, the stranglehold of neo-conservatism, the contempt for minorities. The denizens of Hollywood were simply reacting to their world as they saw it. The other major critically-acclaimed movies of that year were Transamerica, about one man's battle to change his gender, and Syriana, which told Americans that their nation's policies were largely responsible for Islamist terrorism.

Then there's political correctness. Gandhi won Best Picture over ET. The Academy decided that the biopic of a great and influential leader was more "important" than the woes of a cute alien stranded on our planet. (This incensed Steven Spielberg so much that he decided to give the Academy the "important" films they felt comfortable with, and made The Colour Purple - which didn't win any Oscars - and Schindler's List - which raked them in.) Tom Hanks won his first best acting Oscar for Philadelphia, as much for his acting as for being the first major star to portray a gay man suffering from AIDS. In Hollywood, that's called "courage".

So The Reader can't win. After all, its female protagonist is a former Auschwitz guard who let 300 Jews burn alive in a locked church. The film's position on morality is too nuanced for the general Academy member to grapple with with any success. But Kate Winslet can be given the award for best actress. By taking this controversial role and baring her body so naturally for the purposes of art, she has shown "courage". Milk is about homosexuality, so Sean Penn gets the statuette for "courage", but not the film. Benjamin Button, which was co-produced by its star Brad Pitt, is probably seen as too much the case of an actor showing off, while being aided by more-than-state-of-the art visual effects. Frost/Nixon? Who's interested?

So Slumdog has won, and we should really rejoice for the six children who acted in it, for they are the real stars of the film. We should rejoice for AR Rahman, though the music he has got his two Oscars for is not even of his average quality, forget his sublime and exhilarating stuff. But the Academy has decided. But I really think it's a bit too much if we take this as a victory for Indian cinema. It's a non-Indian film which happened to have an all-Indian cast. We shoot entire films abroad nowadays, especially in the US, remember?

Will Smith is the Hollywood's most valuable actor according to Forbes.com's Star currency Survey. The survey took an exclusive look at what the business side of Hollywood really thinks of more than 1,400 working actors when it comes to ensuring the financial success of film projects.

Smith received a perfect score of 10 in the survey. Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio and Angelina Jolie, came second with a score of 9.89. Its the time of the Oscars. The 81st annual Academy award ceremony happened yesterday at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood during which the world saw the recognition of some of the great talents in the movie industry. Slumdog Millionaire, a British drama film shot in India, directed by Danny Boyle did its magic by bagging the most number of Oscars at the 81st annual academy awards. The film, which tracks the journey of an 18-year-old boy from rags-to-riches, won eight Oscars out of the 10 categories it was nominated for. It became the fourth film along with Gandhi to get the highest number of Oscar awards. Great Job guys!!!

WHEN AND WHERE WAS THE FIRST OSCAR CEREMONY HELD???
The 1st Academy Awards ceremony was held on Thursday, May 16, 1929, at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood to honor outstanding film achievements of 1927 and 1928. It was hosted by actor Douglas Fairbanks and director William C. deMille.
HOW DID THE OSCARS GET ITS NAME???
The root of the name Oscar is contested. One biography of Bette Davis claims that she named the Oscar after her first husband, band leader Harmon Oscar Nelson; one of the earliest mentions in print of the term Oscar dates back to a TIME Magazine article about the 1934 6th Academy Awards and to Bette Davis's receipt of the award in 1936. Walt Disney is also quoted as thanking the Academy for his Oscar as early as 1932. Another claimed origin is that of the Academy's Executive Secretary, Margaret Herrick, who first saw the award in 1931 and made reference to the statuette reminding her of her Uncle Oscar. CAN THE WINNERS SELL THEIR OSCAR STATUETTES???
